first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionI am writing to complain about the Stockade-athon.The key word is Stockade. Why is it not run down in the Stockade? Why is it not run on a Saturday instead of a Sunday? All the streets I saw blocked off did not need to be. I never saw a runner. Sunday is a day of worship. People could not get to church. I was one of these people. Run the Stockade-athon in Central Park or down in the Stockade. Why inconvenience people trying to get to church? Please pass this on to the people who plan this race.Claudette HowardSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:Anderson starts, but Dodgers finish off NLCS winEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsSchenectady, Saratoga casinos say reopening has gone well; revenue down 30%Motorcyclist injured in Thursday afternoon Schenectady crashlast_img read more

first_imgNewspapers are meant to inform readers of issues that impact our lives. There are issues in the news that I would rather not know about, too. (May 31, “Wasting too much ink on straws”). However, if I ignore them, then I will be uninformed. If I’m uninformed, then my lack of information will keep me from understanding an issue.News pertaining to the environment is something we’d better not ignore. It has everything to do with health and safety for us and future generations. For example: There are at least 87,000 tons of garbage of all kinds in the Pacific garbage field, (Daily Gazette, March 23, 2018), about four times the size of California and growing. Categories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion Straws are just one component of this floating pile of debris — just one of several ocean garbage patches throughout the world. I’m not a scientist, so I wouldn’t know about this if I didn’t have journalists to keep me informed.A word of caution from a 70-year-old: We can do without items like plastic straws, foam cups and plastic bags.Somehow, those of us who made it this far did without these things for at least half of our lives. If we don’t pay attention, we’re in for one heck of a ride into the future, where we will have to do without many more important things than straws.Articles in the newspaper encourage me to investigate further on my own to keep me better informed.Florence CarnahanSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsMotorcyclist injured in Thursday afternoon Schenectady crashEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesSchenectady man dies following Cutler Street dirt bike crashlast_img read more
