Huskies ready for playoff run

first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Fort St. John Huskies put in a brief but brisk practice yesterday in preparation for the start for their first round best of five playoff series which begins tonight against the Sexsmith Vipers. It was Fort St. John holding the edge in the season series between the clubs as the Huskies won five out of the six meetings.Assistant coach Todd Alexander said everyone is feeling good heading into the postseason but noted the importance of his players keeping their emotions in check.“There’s a lot of excitement. Any time that you head into playoffs there always is excitement. The trick is to bottle it up and use it properly and don’t get over excited and get into penalty trouble or anything like that. Use your emotions towards the good part of the game and carry energy and have high energy shifts and high energy forechecks,” he said.- Advertisement -Since the NWJHL trade deadline in early January the Huskies have played great hockey with a record of 9-3-0 in that time. A number of alterations have been done to what the team does on the ice according to Alexander, along with playing with a better grasp of fundamental hockey.“We’ve got to play how we’ve been playing this last month or so. We’ve done assignment hockey a lot better. Our systems have come a long way. We’ve made a couple adjustments and figured some things out on what we can and what we can’t do. We know who we are and if we stick with who we are and we don’t try to play the game to other team’s strengths or abilities then I think we’ve got ourselves a pretty good opportunity, just as good as anybody else in the playoffs this year,” he said.Game one tonight gets underway at the North Peace Arena at 8 p.m. Game two will be in Sexsmith Saturday night with the series returning to Fort St. John Tuesday evening for game three. If needed game four will be next Wednesday with the series going no later than February 27th for game five.Advertisementlast_img
